However, despite the fact that the new version of XP SP3 RC2 is up for grabs, the Redmond company failed to breathe a single word on the new release. Microsoft has managed to remain mute not only on the release to manufacturing date of XP SP3, but also on the development milestones of the service pack. The latest version opened to the XP SP2 users makes no exception. As was the case with the first XP SP3 RC2 build, a registry script will permit XP SP2 machines to detect, download and install the Release Candidate 2 version of the service pack through Windows Updates.
"Download the script and run it on a machine currently running Windows XP Service Pack 2. The script sets a registry key on your system. The registry key is required for Windows Update to recognize your machine as a valid target for Windows XP Service Pack 3 RC2," Microsoft explained.
The Release Candidate notes for the latest version of XP SP3 RC2 have not been touched in the least. Every detail is exactly the same as in the previous build of XP SP3 RC2. But now, Microsoft has also made available the German, English and Japanese standalone versions of XP SP3 RC2, weighing 312.0 MB for WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-DEU.exe, 315.2 MB for WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe and 324.5 MB for WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-JPN.exe.
"Versions of Windows XP Service Pack 3 prior to Release Candidate 2 should be removed before attempting to use the registry key. Windows Update will not offer Release Candidate 2 to machines with previous versions of the Windows XP Service Pack 3 beta. It is recommended that you apply the resulting update package to an activated, genuine copy of Windows XP, in a test environment. As with any pre-release software, it is also recommended that you back up files and settings on your machine before applying this update package," Microsoft informed.
Note: When I tried to install the new Windows XP SP3 RC2 build on top of XP SP2 on a machine where SP3 had never been deployed, I got an "access denied error" and installation failed. At the time of this article, all efforts to deploy the standalone package of XP SP3 RC2 resulted in failed attempts.

Kubuntu-KDE4 Hardy Alpha
Kubuntu with the 8.04 release, a commercially supported KDE 3 edition
and a community supported KDE 4 edition. It includes KDE 4.0.1 and a
few applications from KDE 3 to fill in any gaps.
This is our first alpha for the KDE 4 version of Kubuntu. As with any
first alpha there remains much polishing to be done (you will need to
run knetworkmanager manually for example) but it gives a good overview
of what will be released as 8.04 in April.

ATI/AMD Radeon 4000 HD
Accordingly, the graphics chips of the Radeon 4000 HD continues to 55nm production technology and DirectX 10.1. The new high-end model is the ATI Radeon 4870 HD X2 (R700XT). Like the Radeon 3870 HD X2 are two (RV770) graphics chips on one board. With over 2 TeraFLOPS (FLOPS = Gleitkommaoperationen per second), this graphics card is theoretically four times faster than a Radeon HD 3870th Radeon HD 4870 X2HD X2 Radeon 4870 graphics card with 1 or 2 Gbyte GDDR5 memory and should consume approximately 250 watts. There will be a chip clock of 1050 MHz and a memory clock of 1800 MHz.
Successor of HD Radeon 3850 and 3870 (RV670), HD Radeon 4850 and 4870 (RV770). The memory interface remains 256bit and ROPs (raster Opera Tons) at 16, but the number of stream processors (shader units) will be from 320 to 480 and a decrease in Texture Mapping Units (TMUs) by 16 to 32 doubled. The power saving technology is to be "idle" less than 10 watts consumed.
The Radeon 4870 should HD with 1024 Mbytes memory and is equipped with 1050/2200 MHz run. The power consumption is under load with 150 watts. The Radeon 4850 HD taktet with 850/1800 MHz, on the other hand, has 512 Mbytes GDDR5 and consumes about 120 watts.
The RV740 forms the basis of the mainstream Radeon graphics cards HD 4650 and the 4670th The graphics chip has 240 Stream Processors, 12 ROPs, 24 TMUs and a 256bit memory interface - twice as wide as usual, otherwise the price range under 120 euros.
The HD Radeon 4670 with 512 MB GDDR4 memory taktet well with 1000/1200 MHz and consumes about 100 watts. The Radeon 4850 HD, however, equipped with 256 MB and runs with 800/1000 MHz.
In the low-end or entry-range plans AMD the Radeon 4450 and 4470 HD with RV710 graphics chip. The specifications are 40 shader units, 4 ROPs, 8 TMUs and a 128bit memory interface. Supports GDDR3 memory and DDR2. The power consumption will no load less than 5 watts. 30 Watt (4450) sein. The 3D-operation should be 50 watts (4470) or 30 watts (4450).
The Radeon 4470 HD taktet with 900/800 MHz and has 256 MB of GDDR3 memory. The Radeon 4450 HD must be opposed with 128 Mbyte DDR2 SDRAM and runs shortfall expected to 700/500 MHz.
