Ubuntu 8.10 a.k.a. Intrepid Ibex

None other than the father of Ubuntu Linux, Mark Shuttleworth, announced last night the name and the goals for the next version of this marvelous operating system, Ubuntu 8.10 (codename Intrepid Ibex); scheduled for release in October 2008: "With Hardy now past feature-freeze it's time to start to plan features that are being lined up for inclusion after Ubuntu 8.04 LTS is released in April. And so I'd like to introduce you to the Intrepid Ibex, the release which is planned for October 2008, and which is likely to have the version number 8.10."

For the Intrepid Ibex, the development team will prepare an unbelievable desktop, with an amazing performance, that will work on mostly any computer (be it a high-end workstation or an old and dusty Pentium III machine). Another major feature planned for Ubuntu 8.10 will be the ability to stay connected to the Internet (read: wireless connections) wherever you go: "We want you to be able to move from the office, to the train, and home, staying connected all the way." - said Mark Shuttleworth.

OK, OK.... so what's this so-called Ibex, you may wonder? Well, according to Wikipedia, Ibex is a type of wild mountain goat with large recurved horns (see the article's photo) that are transversely ridged in front. Ibex are found in Eurasia, North Africa, and East Africa. Ranging in height from 27 to 43 inches and weighing 200 to 270 pounds (90 to 120 kg), the ibex can live 20 years.

Ubuntu 8.10, or should I say "The Ibex", will be the ninth release and the fourth anniversary of the first release, 4.10 (if anyone still remembers it). But until then, we have another version that should capture our attention and invade our computers, Ubuntu 8.04 (a.k.a. Hardy Heron), which will be available on April 24th, 2008.

Deneb 45nm K10.5 works just fine

AMD has samples of K10.5 quad core codenamed Deneb for some time now and the big customers such as HP and Dell have already seen this baby.

It looks promising and it works, but this doesn’t mean that the production will go flawlessly. The first samples of K10 were finished in December 2006 and it didn’t help AMD solve the problems that occurred at launch in September 2007.

Intel's Nehalem is also taped out in some point in August 2007 but it doesn’t mean that Nehalem will be on schedule and executed flawlessly either, but it is more likely to happen. For AMD’s sake, we hope that Deneb 45nm K10.5 will come in early second half of 2008 and that it will work well as the company needs a big comeback in the CPU arena.

Deneb is the hope that can get K10 based marchitecture to over 3.0GHz and this the least AMD needs to compete with Intel’s Core 2 Extreme quad core generation.

AMD Triple-core Phenom Processors Inbound

Roadmaps from AMD indicate Dell and Hewlett-Packard will introduce low-end computers based on triple-core AMD Phenom processors this week.

Dell Optiplex computers, targeting the sub-$600 market, will be the first to receive the new triple-core treatment. HP Pavilion desktops will follow shortly after in the sub-$600 and sub-$500 segments. True to the botched announcement earlier this month, Dell will not introduce any of the new AMD processors in its Inspiron desktops.

The new systems will begin to replace Optiplex and Pavilion computers that use AMD Athlon X2 dual-core processors. AMD was to discontinue the majority of its Athlon X2 lineup, but delays with its quad-core Phenom architecture continue to stretch the lifespan of its K8 architecture.

The new triple-core processors, codenamed Toliman, will debut with frequencies as high as 2.3 GHz. Toliman processors feature all of the same capabilities of the high-end Agena processors with the exception of one disabled processor core. This includes 2MB of shared L3 cache and 512KB per core of unshared L2 cache.

In addition to the B2-stepping Toliman processors, AMD will introduce one more B2 Opteron this month: an energy efficient quad-core Barcelona processor. These two processors are the last B2 processors in AMD's arsenal -- the company will officially unveil its B3-stepping processors late next month.

AMD would not comment when, or if, the tri-core processors would make a splash into the retail channel.

B3 processors are unaffected by the TLB bug announced by AMD late last year. Although the bug is extremely difficult to replicate, the AMD-mandated B2 workaround can hamper Phenom and Opteron performance dramatically.

AMD to introduce new integrated graphics chipsets

Intel's stranglehold on the integrated graphics market is indisputable. They have long stood as the number one supplier for onboard GPUs, from desktops to laptops to servers. While there are other challenges, such as Via, little has been done to chip away at their market share. Enter AMD, who now is set to release two new chipsets including integrated graphics cores within the next nine months. The AMD 740/780 series will offer this, and given the warm reception that vendors have been willing to give AMD it seems probable that they will have success with it. Intel's embedded graphics won't be easy to overcome, but they are definitely no performance kings. Given the continued reduction in power each iteration of GPUs could potentially bring, AMD might be able to win not only on price, but performance. Their 780 series chipsets will include DirectX 10 compliant cores, among other goodies:

AMD 780-series core-logic will feature HyperTransport 3.0 bus for CPUs, PCI Express 2.0 x16 and x1 for add-on cards and DirectX 10-compliant graphics core with universal video decoder (UVD) engine as well as D-Sub, DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort outputs. The chipset will be released to mass production in Q1 2008 and mainboards on its based may feature new-generation SB700 I/O controller.
740G and the newer 780 series are expected in Q3 2007 and Q1 2008, respectively. Laptops and low-cost desktops are the primary targets for integrated graphics, so those will be the products to watch over the next year to see if AMD is able to make headroom.

It's entirely possible that AMD may push Intel to revolutionize their integrated GPUs, such as how the stunning success of the Athlon and Athlon64 pushed Intel to develop Core. This is nothing but good for the consumer.
