Windows 7 (formerly codenamed Blackcomb and Vienna) is the next release of Microsoft Windows, an operating system produced by Microsoft for use on personal computers, including home and business desktops, laptops, Tablet PCs, and media center PCs. Microsoft stated in 2007 that it is planning Windows 7 development for a three-year time frame starting after the release of its predecessor, Windows Vista, but that the final release date will be determined by product quality. Unlike its predecessor, Windows 7 is intended to be an incremental upgrade with the goal of being fully compatible with existing device drivers, applications, and hardware. Presentations given by the company in 2008 have focused on multi-touch support, a redesigned Windows Shell with a new taskbar, a home networking system called HomeGroup, and performance improvements. Some applications that have been included with prior releases of Microsoft Windows, most notably Windows Mail (formerly Outlook Express), Windows Movie Maker, and Windows Photo Gallery, are no longer included with the operating system; they are instead offered separately as part of the Windows Live Essentials suite. Windows 7 - It's the next version of Windows for PCs, and it's the result of working hand-in-hand with our partners and with people who use Windows in the real world every day. We're paying particular attention to the things they're telling us are important to them and will make their PCs work the way they want them to - things like enhanced reliability, responsiveness, and faster boot and shut-down. FEATURES: Windows 7 includes a number of new features, such as advances in touch, speech, and handwriting recognition, support for virtual hard disks, improved performance on multi-core processors, improved boot performance, and kernel improvements. According to reports sent to TG Daily, the Milestone 1 build of Windows 7 adds support for systems using multiple heterogeneous graphics cards from different vendors and a new version of Windows Media Center. New features in Milestone 1 also reportedly include Gadgets being integrated into Windows Explorer, a Gadget for Windows Media Center, the ability to visually pin and unpin items from the Start Menu and Taskbar, improved media features, the XPS Essentials Pack being integrated, Windows PowerShell Integrated Scripting Environment (ISE), and a multiline Calculator featuring Programmer and Statistics modes along with unit conversion. Reports indicate that a feedback tool included in Milestone 1 lists some coming features: the ability to store Internet Explorer settings on a Windows Live account, updated versions of Paint and WordPad, and a 10-minute install process. In addition, improved network connection tools might be included. Many new items have been added to the Control Panel including: Accelerators, ClearType Text Tuner, Display Color Calibration Wizard, Gadgets, Infrared, Recovery, Troubleshooting, Workspaces Center, Location and Other Sensors, Credential Manager, Biometric Devices, System Icons, Windows Solution Center, and Display. Windows Security Center has been renamed the Windows Solution Center (Windows Health Center in earlier builds) which encompass both security and maintenance of the computer. The taskbar has seen the biggest visual changes, where the Quick Launch has been merged with the buttons to create an enhanced taskbar or what Microsoft internally refers to as the "Superbar". This enhanced taskbar also enables the Jump Lists feature to allow easy access to common tasks. According to released PDC 2008, which was held 27-30 October 2008, session information, Windows 7 discussions will cover "enhancements to the taskbar, Start Menu, thumbnails and their desktop elements", a new networking API with support for building SOAP based web services in native code (as opposed to.NET based WCF web services), new features to shorten application install times, reduced UAC prompts, simplified development of installation packages,[56] and improved globalization support through a new Extended Linguistic Services API. Windows 7 will also contain a new FireWire (IEEE 1394) stack that fully supports IEEE 1394b with S800, S1600 and S3200 data rates. At WinHEC 2008 Microsoft announced that color depths of 30-bit and 48-bit would be supported in Windows 7 along with the wide color gamut scRGB (which for HDMI 1.3 can be converted and output as xvYCC). The video modes supported in Windows 7 are 16-bit sRGB, 24-bit sRGB, 30-bit sRGB, 30-bit with extended color gamut sRGB, and 48-bit scRGB. BUILDS: Build 6801 On 8 October 2008, screenshots of Windows 7 build 6801 were leaked. On 28 October 2008, Microsoft distributed build 6801 to attendees at its Professional Developers Conference (PDC). It has since been leaked to bittorrent networks. It features an enhanced taskbar similar to the one in build 6933 although it is disabled by default. An unofficial patch has been released to enable the new taskbar in build 6801. Pre-Beta 1 Microsoft also demonstrated build 6933.winmain.081020-1842 during the PDC, but did not give it to attendees. On 14 November 2008, screenshots of Windows 7 build 6936 were leaked by Winfuture. On 20 November 2008, Microsoft posted screenshots of build 6948 on the Engineering Windows 7 blog. In early December, WinFutere.de leaked screenshots of Build 6956, which demonstrated a new bootscreen. (Announced by WinFuture since Build 6954) and several improvements. Windows 7 RC completed, build 7100

Company insiders and Wzor have confirmed that 7100 is the official Windows 7 RC build.

7100.0.winmain_win7rc.090421-1700 was compiled on Tuesday and has reportedly been handed out to OEM partners and TAP gold customers. Earlier this month we reported that build 7077 had leaked online and that Microsoft were pushing towards a 7100 RC release.

Microsoft recently published details about a public RC due for May 5th. We expect MSDN/TechNet customers to receive the bits within the next week if the company is still targeting May 5th.

According to reports, 7115.0.winmain.090421-1650 is the latest build internally at the time of writing.

Hack to Retrieve and Get Windows Experience Index (WEI) Score of Remote Computer

Windows Experience Index (WEI) is a rating score (how to change WEI rating) that giving to a computer to gauge and benchmark the relative performance of the computer and its capability when running Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 (including R2 edition) operating system. WEI subscores and base score are calculated by a free benchmarking command-line utility called WinSAT.

For system administrators or network management managers who need to gather and retrieve Windows Experience Index rating score from many networked computers remotely, the following VBScript may help to get the score number. The VBScript will access the new WMI class called Win32_WinSAT to retrieve the WEI system accessment information from the remote computer. However, the VBScript only works on computer running operating system with WinSAT only, such as Windows Vista and newer OS such as Windows 7.

Microsoft Network Monitor 3.3 released

Network Monitor 3.3 is a protocol analyzer. It allows you to capture network traffic, view and analyze it. Version 3.3 is an update and replaces Network Monitor 3.2. Network Monitor 3.x is a complete overhaul of the previous Network Monitor 2.x version.

The Network Monitor core engine has been decoupled from the parser set. To install the full Network Monitor 3.3 product: • Run the setup.exe for the platform you are installing. • You will be prompted first to install the core engine. Follow the installation directions. Hack to Upgrade Windows 7 From Beta or Pre-RC to RC (70xx to 71xx) Version Directly

According to Microsoft, it is not possible to directly or in-place upgrade from Windows 7 Beta32-bit Windows 7 Build 7077 or 64-bit Windows 7 Build 7077) to final RC (Release Candidate) build, which widely rumored to be build 7100. The blocking of direct upgrade from beta or pre-RC builds to official RC build is meant to avoid potential issues that may affect such upgrade path.

Microsoft recommends Windows 7 beta testers to restore and reinstall Windows Vista prior to upgrade to Windows 7 RC, or perform a clean installation of Windows 7 RC. A few tweaks and enhancements have been introduced during the development process, which can enhance support of Windows Vista to Windows 7 build-to-build upgrade. Build-to-build upgrade within Windows 7 builds may fail, or encounter error, such as setup does not success completely or unable to set some settings. A mechanism has been built into Windows 7 RC to identify non-Vista Windows OS, and block or prevent upgrade of OS from Windows 7 Beta (build 7000 till 7099) and all pre-RC development milestones to final Release Candidate milestone. Users are encouraged to install Windows 7 RC with clean installation (fresh install) method, or use the Windows Easy Transfer feature to save and transfer accounts, settings, files, personalizations, and others from current installation to newly installed Windows 7 RC system. However, there is also a hack technique to circumvent and bypass the limitation.

When trying to upgrade Windows 7 pre-RC build to Windows 7 RC, but been stopped and cannot continue with installation process, before been force to exit gracefully, use the following trick to to upgrade successfully from pre-RC (build 70xx series) to RC (possibly 71xx series).

1. Download the Windows 7 ISO.
2. Burn the Windows 7 ISO image to a DVD, and then copy and whole image to a storage location that you wish to run the upgrade from (can be either any directory/folder on any partition/drive on the machine running the pre-release build, or a bootable USB/FireWire flash drive).

   Alternatively, it’s possible to directly extract the content of the ISO to a desired folder using file extraction tool such as WinRAR.

3. Browse to the sources directory.
4. Open the file cversion.ini in a text editor such as Notepad.
5. Modify the MinClient build number to a value lower than the down-level build. For example, change 7100 to 7000.

   

6. Save the file in original place and original name.
7. Start the setup process of Windows 7 as per normal from the modified copy of the installation files, and the version check will be bypassed.

It’s expected that the next development milestone of Windows 7 - Windows 7 RTM will also be blocked from upgrading directly from Windows 7 RC. If so, the hack above can be used to skip the version check too.
