Windows 7 reaches build 7068

A Microsoft Employee, in his blog post explaining about the new Windows 7 Gadgets platform, ended up posting the initial Windows 7 build 7068 screenshot. The screenshot is just the Windows 7 Desktop but the build string is clearly visible - 7068.winmain.090321-1322 - which means that this build 7068 was compiled on March 21, 2009.

It was also rumored earlier that Windows 7 build 7068 is released on Microsoft Connect to a select group of testers. WinFuture reports that this build might have been released to the Windows 7 TAP Customers, who get involved closely with Microsoft in beta testing their products.

With builds rapidly progressing, we still have more chances that Microsoft may confirm its Windows 7 RC Escrow build at the end of April.

More Windows Mobile 7 screenshots emerge with Zune UI

WMPoweruser has posted some more alleged screenshots of Windows Mobile 7. The screenshots Neowin sighted earlier showed the Today Screen and the Maps utility. The new screenshots shown below, give us a picture of Windows Mobile Marketplace, IM and Zune, possibly from the Windows Mobile 7 UI.

Unlike the earlier screenshots which had a date of October 16, these screenshots reveal no such date details, so as to give away the time this UI was devised and tested.

If these screenshots are from Windows Mobile 7, then the Zune UI confirms the recent rumor that Zune is indeed coming to Windows Mobile 7. Windows Mobile 7 would allow users to wirelessly download music from the Zune Store and billed through the carrier/operator (Over the air downloads via carrier's network), making the bill payments easier. It is quite possible that carriers could bundle a subscription to Zune music with an unlimited data package.

Also, we have to wait and see whether this will expand Zune outside U.S as currently Zune is available only to U.S

Windows Vista SP2: RTM Escrow build reaches beta testers

Neowin earlier reported that the RTM Escrow build of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 had been released to a group of internal testers. Microsoft today released WindowsVista and Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 RTM Escrow build to Connect beta testers.

This build is available on Windows Update for download and install or by a number of other package options such as Slipstream versions and Standalone installers, for the Connect beta testers. The build string reads 6002.17043.090312-1835 which is different from the one we reported earlier.

If you are a Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 SP2 Connect beta tester, you can download this build today from Microsoft Connect.

Windows 7: Build 7057 blocks third-party video codecs

The latest beta of Windows 7 blocks the usage of third party video decoders from Windows Media Player and MCE. Albain, a DirectShow (ffdshow) developer explains in his own words

"Microsoft has locked mpeg4 and h264 codecs into Media Foundation, the replacer of DirectShow (even if directshow is still supported). There is no way to override those codecs, even if you develop a Media Foundation version of your decoder, because Microsoft maintains a list of preferred codecs (their codecs) into the registry (HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and HKLM \MediaFoundation\Transforms\Preferred), and this registry key cannot be modified, even in admin mode. Only TrustedInstaller user can modify it, which is FYI the user that protects system files, and it cannot be used. Microsoft brought those new codecs, but blocked the possibility to use alternate codecs in their applications."

Windows Media Center and Windows Media Player users might need to worry whether things would still be the same in Windows 7 RC or whether it might change, even though there are alternative players options.

The E7 team revealed last month that in addition to built in DivX support, Windows Media Player will also natively support the .mov files.

DirectX End-User Redistributable 9.0c - March 2009

Microsoft DirectX is a group of technologies designed to make Windows-based computers an ideal platform for running and displaying applications rich in multimedia elements such as full-color graphics, video, 3D animation, and rich audio. DirectX includes security and performance updates, along with many new features across all technologies, which can be accessed by applications using the DirectX APIs.

At the core of DirectX are its application programming interfaces, or APIs. The APIs act as a kind of bridge for the hardware and the software to "talk" to each other. The DirectX APIs give multimedia applications access to the advanced features of high-performance hardware such as three-dimensional (3-D) graphics acceleration chips and sound cards. They control low-level functions, including two-dimensional (2-D) graphics acceleration; support for input devices such as joysticks, keyboards, and mice; and control of sound mixing and sound output. Because of DirectX, what you experience with your computer is better 3-D graphics and immersive music and audio effects.

Additional Information:
- The DirectX redist installation includes all the latest and previous released DirectX runtime. This includes the bi-monthly D3DX, XInput, and Managed DirectX components.
- The DirectX runtime cannot be uninstalled. We recommend Windows Me and Windows XP users create a "System Restore" point before installing.

Simply put, DirectX is a Windows technology that enables higher performance in graphics and sound when you’re playing games or watching video on your PC.
