INTEL RAID/AHCI Drivers & Storage Console v8.2.3.1001

Intel has released a new version of their RAID & AHCI (SATA) controller drivers for all 32bit and 64bit versions and all flavours of Windows XP, Server 2003 and VISTA. There's a lot of confusion about this product (even amongst technicians), so here's a quick summary of it's features.

This is also known as the Intel Matrix Storage Manager:

Intel Application Accelerator RAID Edition, Intel® Application Accelerator 4.x, Intel Matrix Storage Technology software, and Intel Matrix Storage Manager all refer to different versions of the same product. Intel® Matrix Storage Manager is the name of the current version.

On specific desktop and mobile platforms (listed below) the Intel Matrix Storage Manager provides software support for high-performance Serial ATA RAID 0 arrays, fault-tolerant Serial ATA RAID 1 arrays, Intel Rapid Recover Technology (spare disk), AHCI Native Command Queuing for increased performance, matrix RAID for two RAID volumes on a single array, and an improved user interface for enhanced usability.

The old version v8.2.0.1001 had a heap of known issues listed in the release notes. They might have been fixed with the updated version, but unfortunately INTEL hasn't released a changelog yet.

It's the End for 3.11!!

for those that were not aware, we recently announced that effective November 1st, 2008, OEM's will no longer be able to license Windows for Workgroups 3.11 in the embedded channel. Now we all know that it's been long gone in the standard (retail/OEM) channel, but one of the unique things in the embedded business is that we allow the classic OS products to be sold longer than the other channels. it's *finally the end of an era!

XP SP3 Goes on Automatic Updates This Thursday

Although a Microsoft manager had mentioned that XP SP3 would arrive "shortly" to Automatic Updates on Monday, the timetable became specific as the company quietly said today it would release the upgrade on Thursday at 10 a.m. PDT. Microsoft will add Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) to Windows Update at that time, and trigger its automatic download and installation for users who have left the operating system's update service at its default "Automatic (recommended)" setting.

"Updated applicability rules and updated metadata to target the update to Automatic Update channel," read a Microsoft support document revised Tuesday after the company unveiled its monthly security patches . "The Automatic Update change will be published at 10:00 A.M. on July 10." Microsoft delayed the distribution of Windows XP SP3 twice this spring, but the July 10 date seems firm; it was included in the cumulative list of all updates available via Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), the server-side update tool many businesses use, as well as via the client-side Windows Update (WU) and Microsoft Update Web-based services. A Microsoft spokeswoman, however, was not able to immediately confirm that July 10 will, in fact, be XP SP3's automatic update debut.

Development Release: Ubuntu 8.10 Alpha 2

Steve Langasek announced the availability of the slightly delayed second alpha release of Ubuntu 8.10, code name "Intrepid Ibex": "Welcome to Intrepid Ibex Alpha-2, which will in time become Ubuntu 8.10. Pre-releases of Intrepid are *not* encouraged for anyone needing a stable system or anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional, even frequent breakage. They are, however, recommended for Ubuntu developers and those who want to help in testing, reporting, and fixing bugs. Alpha 2 is the second in a series of milestone CD images that will be released throughout the Intrepid development cycle. The Alpha images are known to be reasonably free of showstopper CD build or installer bugs, while representing a very recent snapshot of Intrepid." Daemon-Tools is an advanced application for multiprotection emulation. It is further development of Generic Safedisc emulator and incorporates all its features. This program allows running Backup Copies of SafeDisc (C-Dilla), Securom or Laserlock protected games.
